9. A PROGRAM FOR REDUCTION OF GAP BETWEEN ACTUAL STANDARD AND CLASS STANDARD OF THE STUDENT - PROPOSED FOR VACATION 2006

A PROGRAM TO REDUCE THE GAP BETWEEN THE ACTUAL STANDARD AND THE CLASS STANDARD OF SCHOOL STUDENTS

Anything needs some support to stay on. Anyone needs to participate to stick to a place. Tender the age more true are these two. For some reason - known or unknown, to be noted or ignored here, whatever be it - many inconsistencies related to the above two have cropped up in the present scenario of the schools.

What teachers attempt to lay onto/into the intellectual edifice of the pupils is observed as often falling and rolling down into the valleys. In order to meet the current academic schedules the teacher by and large seems to have been compelled to ignore a greater chunk of the class room. Also, the teacher is not very rarely seen ignoring the entire class group! This repeats at every grade as the student is promoted to higher and higher classes. More and more of what was attempted to be laid onto, remains never stayed. Higher the class greater is the gap. The individual needs of a vast majority of the students remain un-addressed on any occasion of this entire traversal to higher classes. These students have no one else than their schoolteachers to fill such gaps. The kind of facility of educated parents and individual tuitions as seen available to a few of their counterparts is a luxury to them. The active academic calendar (early June to late April) does not seem to permit the present resources to address such needs. Or, it may be that no effective strategy is currently made available to meet this need within the existing resources.

What goes on in the classroom seems to be seldom concerned with the participation of the pupil. Greater the gap more is the impossibility of participation. This causes a negative impact on the intellectual growth of the child. Not only that new intellectual skills are not acquired but also whatever other generic skills remained too become endangered. The attitudes and emotions too become distorted. It forces harmful imbalance in the personality of the child. Absenteeism begins. It repeats and the spells of absence elongate. Finally, it leads to the highly damaging dropping out of school. In all cases, we can firmly believe, it leaves a horrible mark on the mindset of the child against the very formal education. Try to assess the colossal damage to the intellectual growth of the child due to such a notion where everywhere and all around all dissemination of knowledge at present occurs by and large in the formal ways only.

There is a lot to be done to correct all this. Various efforts are being carried out to handle a variety of issues. This proposal too is one such. However, there is one thing to be noted in this.
This does not need any funds either from the government or any other agency. It believes in the prevalence of social voluntarism among the concerned communities and also it underlines the prevalence of massive and widespread resource persons needed for this program.
The proposal is one kind of After School Program. It is expected to span between the end of the academic year and the beginning of a new. It is not conducted either parallel are simultaneously with the regular academics.

Problem Defined:

The disturbing and ever deepening gulf between the class standards and the actual standard of majority of the students is the problem.

Target Defined:

Bridging this gap to some extent this year and making the classroom teaching in the next academic session a little more comfortable to the children. The continuation of this program every year is expected to give remarkable results. What appears as not possible during the active academic schedule becomes possible in the vacation.
Program Statement:

The deficiencies - deficiencies in terms of concepts and core skills - of every individual student are identified by the respective teacher. They are written down on a paper by the teacher. The student is given a copy of it or the original of it before the last working day of this academic year. The teacher advises the student to look for and get hold of some suitable resource person available in his/her circles during vacation and to show the requirements sheet to them to get quick and focused assistance for their fulfillment.

The more interested and concerned of the educated - relatively educated - would search for such students, adopt about a five of them each for this vacation period and carry out their efforts guided by the assessment sheet or other more effective assessments, if instantaneously possible. Such of the educated are rallied in great numbers by trumpet calls and various other initiatives of committed activists of the communities to which the above students are understood as belonging. The government and other resourceful agencies need to leave a little space to popularize this program that improves their image or at least does not effect any significant deviation to their regular business.
